Chapter 12

“Does he have any babies strolling around that you don’t know about?” Lacy asked bitterly, her attempt at sarcasm not floating so blissfully by Autumn.

“No, he doesn’t,” Autumn snapped back, so fast that Betty closed the magazine she was reading and looked up.

“How do you know, Autumn? He could be lying. If I’d asked Eric before that little tramp came to my door, he would have said he had no children except Jordan. So how do you really know that he’s not lying to you?” Lacy stood in the middle of the living room, then she took a seat on the sofa.

“He doesn’t have kids,” Betty answered. “That was the first question I asked Mable. She knows his family well.” Betty looked as though she was proud of what she’d done and smiled.

They were at Lacy’s house and Emmit had stayed at home. Lacy and Autumn looked at each other in disbelief.

“Mom, please tell me you’re joking?” Autumn asked.

“No, I’m not joking. And just so you know, I ran into his brother and got some information from him, too. We were in Macy’s and I recognized him.”

“Eric said that you called his job and cursed him out. But he deserved it. Otherwise, I would have been totally pissed off at you,” Lacy said and rolled her eyes at Betty.

“Philip called me three nights in a row. But thanks to you for nosing around in his business, I haven’t heard from him since. Thanks a lot, Mom. Why would you do such a stupid thing? You give me no credit for thinking for myself. Why can’t you mind your own business for a change?” Autumn hissed and turned her back to Betty.

Betty hopped off the sofa. “You listen to me, Autumn.”

“No, Mom. You have gone too far this time, and I’ve kept my mouth shut long enough. But this time you have to know what you’ve done to me.”

Betty looked at Lacy for help.

“Don’t look at me. Autumn has a right to be pissed off. What if she really liked the man?”

Autumn grabbed her purse and started to the door, then stopped and turned around to face Betty. “I’m telling you for the last time. Let me live my own life. The next man I meet, you won’t know him. You’ve run Philip away.” She pranced out the door and slammed it behind her.

Lacy ran to the door and stuck her head out. “Don’t slam my door because you are angry at Mom. You could have broken my window.”

Autumn heard Lacy but didn’t look back at her.

“Damn, Damn,” Autumn said after she’d gotten inside the car. She and Philip had had so many good conversations and were beginning to know each other. It wasn’t that she wanted to date, but they were actually becoming friends. And she needed a friend. The only thing she hadn’t told him about was her sex addiction. Maybe now she wouldn’t have to tell him. He would remember her for what he saw, and what she had told him.
